Ninth graders attending Catholic High School are not required to attend small and large group sessions.
Students in 10th and 11th Grade
Confirmation preparation is a two-year process of initiation into the Catholic Church through the parish. The general purposes are to:
--- call one forth to maturity in body, mind and soul
--- foster commitment to the Catholic Christian Tradition
--- challenge each confirmand to give witness to gospel values in their daily lives by responding to God’s personal and unique call
Confirmation classes are formed at the beginning of Confirmation Year I, and the class roster remains consistent through Confirmation Year II. Requests for changes are approved at the discretion of the Director of Youth Ministry.
Youth of families registered at St. John Vianney must satisfactorily complete the Confirmation Preparation Program sponsored by the parish. “Satisfactory completion” is determined by mutual agreement of the Pastor, Director of Youth Ministry, confirmand’s advisor, confirmand’s parent(s) and confirmand.
Confirmands from other parishes are welcome to celebrate at St. John Vianney after consultation with the Director of Youth Ministry.
The strongest religious identities are built on custom, habit, experience, and reflection nourished by prayer and service. Living faith is both a personal and communal relationship with God. The structure and content of the program emphasizes the process by which confirmands, sponsors and advisors are encouraged to build foundations in their lives that will support healthy and loving encounters with God and others.
Materials and experiences carefully read, attentively considered, seriously discussed and applied to daily life, can help the confirmand respond to divine grace and grow in faith, hope, love and service.
Each candidate must be an active participant in all activities in the Confirmation Preparation Program.
Two Year Preparation As a sign of their desire to enter the Church as fully initiated members, each candidate is expected to participate in the following during the two-year preparation:
1. The initial orientation meeting. 2. Regular attendance at Sunday liturgies. 3. Monthly small group meetings. 4. Choosing a sponsor and maintaining appropriate contact. 5. Reading and/or completing written assignments. 6. Attending scheduled large group gatherings. 7. An interview with the small group advisor at the end of the first and second year. 8. Outreach (service). 9. At least one weekend retreat sponsored by the parish. 10. If choosing a confirmation name different from given Baptismal name, the meaning of the chosen name must be researched, and the reasons for taking this name must be explained in writing. 11. Writing a personal letter to the Bishop requesting to be confirmed. This program is based upon the following:
